About this book

Bob longs for the excitement of his uncle's exploring trips, but a game near the streetcar tracks brings danger much closer to home. A tiny, white-haired scout named Sure Pop pulls him back from an approaching car and begins teaching him to notice what is happening around him. Bob and his twin sister, Betty, become pupils in a series of adventures that combine everyday hazards with a visitor from the mysterious Borderland.

Roy Rutherford Bailey uses fantasy to make accident prevention a children's story. Magic buttons help the twins understand the consequences of careless actions, including throwing stones at trains. Their concern develops into a plan to organize other children as Safety Scouts, with Betty insisting that girls belong too. The book offers a glimpse of early safety education, linking alertness and practical caution with courtesy, responsibility, and care for other people.
