About this book

When Miss Lawson's school closes unexpectedly, nearly eight-year-old Jimmy Wilmot faces a troubling trip from Ramsgate to London. His parents live far away, his uncle has not answered a letter, and the possible alternative is a stay with Aunt Selina, whom he dreads visiting. Thomas Cobb builds this children's story around a small boy's urgent questions and the adults who have to decide where he will go.

Jimmy's uncertainty soon becomes a street adventure. After travelling on the wrong train, he mistakes a policeman's gruff teasing for a threat and runs away while the man buys food. The close attention to his frightened reasoning gives the episode both suspense and sympathy. Short chapters and direct dialogue make this a useful choice for readers who enjoy older children's fiction about independence, mistaken intentions and the need for a reassuring home.
