About this book
The preface treats surnames dating back to Anglo-Saxon times as part of a general system governing Teutonic names and as a branch of science. The stated aim is to show that this portion of surnames is much larger than has generally been supposed. The discussion allows that Scotland may derive from nationality in some cases, while noting its appearance as a man's name before surnames begin to appear.
The discussion of Gay prefers a proved Anglo-Saxon name to an assumed word, however suitable the word's meaning may seem. The proposed group includes Gay, Gye, Gedge, Gage, Kay, Key, Kegg, Kedge and Cage as variations, in the author's view, of one original name.
