About this book
History of Christian names is by Charlotte M. Yonge. The pages sampled trace names through languages and calendars. One passage on Simon notes that the anchorite who perched on a column is called both Simeon and Simon Stylites, that the Greek Church has St. Seeméön on 3 February and St. Ssimon on 10 May, and that the name left surnames such as Simmonds, Simkins, Simpson, Simcoe and Sykes. Another gives Samuel as meaning 'Asked of God'.
Other passages take names from old Norse and Germanic myth, including the sword Tyrfing, forged by the dwarfs, the sea god Niörd, and the goddess Nerthus mentioned by Tacitus. The book also carries a glossary that serves as an index. Its entries mark each name by language and gender and give a meaning and a page number, such as Mose, 'drawn out', and Morna, 'beloved (?)'.
