About this book
A faint sound reaches Frosty before his brothers notice anything, introducing a kitten whose sharp hearing, curiosity and confidence shape this outdoor adventure. Jim Kjelgaard gives the cat a distinct viewpoint, attending to small movements, sounds and the way an animal sizes up its surroundings. Published in 1957, the novel places its animal story in the swamps of Louisiana and connects it with a boy's practical hopes for the land.
Andy is trying to establish a muskrat population, calculating breeding numbers while confronting the limits of his plans. Predators, uncertain survival rates and Luke Trull complicate the work. When Frosty comes through his door, Andy welcomes the kitten, who accepts companionship on his own terms. Readers interested in animal fiction will find close observation alongside the problems of making a living from a swamp, with patience and experience carrying as much weight as bold action.
