About this book
Synge and the Ireland of His Time is a work by W. B. Yeats. The preface says that at times during Synge's last illness, Lady Gregory and its writer would speak of his work.
The narrator was lecturing in Aberdeen on Saturday, January 26th, 1907, when he was given a telegram saying 'Play great success.' The play being performed for the first time is The Playboy of the Western World, and a telegram says that the audience broke up in disorder at the word shift. About forty young men sat on the front seats of the pit, and stamped and shouted and blew trumpets from the rise to the fall of the curtain. The text also recalls a luncheon of biscuits and porter, and Synge asking, 'Did we pay for what we had?'
