About this book

A pair of wooden clogs sets a servant's kindness against a lord's pride in the opening tale of this collection. Heishiro warms Daté Masamuné's footwear while his master admires a snowy landscape. Misreading the gesture, Masamuné strikes him, and the injured servant enters religious training with revenge in mind. Published in 1920, Asataro Miyamori's collection presents Japanese short fiction concerned with Bushido, the moral principles associated with the samurai.

Another episode follows Torii Katsutaka as he prepares to seek help for a besieged castle. He proposes crossing a river and using smoke signals to report the approach of supporting armies. The swollen current, warning ropes and watchful sentinels make his undertaking hazardous. These scenes bring questions of loyalty and rank into concrete situations, from care for a master's comfort to courage under military pressure. Readers interested in Japanese storytelling can examine how public duty, wounded pride and personal resolve shape the choices within these tales.
