About this book

A teacher and his young companion climb a strange mountain at sunset, setting the tone for Lafcadio Hearn's collection of Japanese legends and reflections. Published in 1899, the book moves between unsettling tales and accounts of customs and Buddhist belief. In another early piece, the sight of a purple silk robe in a shop recalls a story of longing and an ominous garment passed from owner to owner.

Hearn also studies religious objects with a close eye for their design and meaning. His discussion of the Buddha's footprints compares sacred texts, temple tracings and the symbols engraved upon monuments in Japan. These passages give the supernatural stories a setting among everyday objects and established traditions. Readers interested in folklore can find both eerie narrative scenes and a thoughtful account of how beliefs take visible form in robes, stone carvings and devotional images.
