About this book

At nine, Inna Weston travels from London to Cherton to stay with her great uncle, Dr. Jonathan Willett. A railway conversation with lively Dick Gregory introduces the farm that awaits her, its busy physician and its housekeeper, Mrs. Grant. Inna is shy but quick to laugh, and her concern about speaking fairly of other people gives their playful exchange a serious undertone.

Emilie Searchfield blends this attention to manners and character with outdoor danger in an English children's novel. In a later scene, Inna and Jenny struggle to stay awake on the Tor during a snowstorm after Dick has set out into the storm. Carlo, the farm dog, reaches them before the adults arrive. The contrast between friendly conversation and the fear of waiting in the cold gives readers a clear view of the story's interests: childhood friendship, care for others and courage under pressure.
