About this book
Parental pride and public credulity give William L. Stone ample material for this comic novel set in New York State. Its subject, Wheelwright, is treated as a genius whose qualifications struggle to match his opportunities. The narrator adopts the manner of a friendly biographer while poking fun at flattering life stories, indulgent parents, academic honors and the pursuit of profitable professions. His succession of ventures brings financial reversals and encounters with poverty.
The school episode makes the satire especially concrete. An elaborate advertisement persuades a village that a remarkable new institution is about to open, stirring plans for buildings, trustees and grand academic privileges. Wheelwright prepares earnestly for teaching but relies on textbooks with ready answers, and arithmetic and grammar expose his weaknesses.
