About this book

A proper introduction can become a ridiculous ordeal in Donald Ogden Stewart's parody of social etiquette. Published in 1922, Perfect Behavior adopts the assured voice of a manners handbook while turning its rules into comic scenes. The opening follows a hypothetical young man, Richard Roe, whose interest in Dorothy Doe begins at the financial firm where her father is president. Calling cards, polite phrases and careful introductions become occasions for increasingly absurd advice.

The chapters extend this treatment to weddings, travel, concerts, correspondence, dinners and sports. A school visitor faces an elaborate demand for character references, while the discussion of golf gives social standing and pleasing an employer the importance usually reserved for playing the game. Stewart's humor comes from the gap between polished language and unreasonable conduct. Readers interested in social satire will find a portrait of people treating status and correct form as matters of overwhelming importance.
