About this book

A chance discovery in a coat pocket gives this animal tale its unusual storyteller. After a walk near Croydon, a narrator encounters a talking squirrel and offers its account as a gift to Anne. The squirrel begins with its birth in Caen Wood near Hampstead, then describes being taken to Hackney by Thomas Howard. A chain and a revolving cage fitted with bells turn a small woodland creature into a household amusement.

Told through the squirrel's own voice, the episodes ask readers to consider how human entertainment feels to the animal providing it. An apple at dinner creates an opportunity for escape, though the attached chain brings another difficulty in a garden. Later scenes show children condemning unkind treatment while also taking part in teasing. These contradictions give the story its moral focus: sympathy for animals means paying attention to their distress and changing how they are treated.
