The Adventures of Sally
On her twenty-first birthday Sally Nicholas comes into a small fortune, and the money frees her from the New York boarding house where she has been scraping by. What it cannot do is settle her heart or steady the people around her, chiefly her hapless brother Fillmore and the amiable, luckless Ginger Kemp, an Englishman who keeps losing jobs and finding trouble. Sally spends her inheritance and her energy trying to sort out other lives, and slowly learns which affections are worth keeping. Warmer and more romantic than the Jeeves books, this is Wodehouse writing a genuine heroine, generous and clear-eyed, at the centre of the comedy. Free to read here as a PDF and EPUB edition.
