About this book

A perfectly timed cup of tea introduces the balance of power in Bertie Wooster's household. Bertie has the money and the leisure, but his valet Jeeves supplies the judgment, even sending back shirts he considers unsuitable. In these comic stories of English upper-class life, Bertie's conversational narration turns clothing, meals and small social difficulties into occasions for elaborate distress. His school friend Bingo Little adds another complication when a walk in London leads to a meeting with a waitress named Mabel.

The comedy also reaches the racecourse at Goodwood, where a disappointing horse leaves Bertie dismayed and Bingo launches into a public speech about wealthy owners. Wodehouse gives these scenes their pace through brief exchanges, inflated complaints and the gap between Bertie's confidence and his need for advice. Readers interested in character comedy can follow the changing situations while enjoying the contrast between a talkative employer and an economical, composed servant.
