About this book
The Aftermath, or Gleanings from a Busy Life, is by Hilaire Belloc. A piece headed Reviewing calls the ancient and honourable art of Reviewing, without question, the most important branch of that great calling. A review of a book listed as The Snail: Its Habitat, &c., Adam Charles, includes the words “This book comes at a most opportune moment.” The telephone rings again, and once more the Editor asks whether the review had been sent off.
A run of verse lines carries bracketed marks such as ( commonplace ) and ( delete ) after the line “Things are not as they were”. A description of the gifted table talk lists, among others, the government, the misfortunes of foreign nations and the definition of the word “gentleman” as subjects.
