About this book
The introduction to The Book of the Bayeux Tapestry places a document unique in Europe at Bayeux in Normandy, in the main room of what was once the Bishop’s Palace. The introduction says the date of the work is not certain, and that there is not a definite proof of the year or years in which the work was finished. The introduction says no other nation has such a document as the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle or as the Doomsday Survey.
The text says that no one who looks at the Tapestry can doubt what the point of one episode is, namely that Harold was in all that followed a treacherous friend. The text says the 69th panel itself has Odo of Bayeux, the Bishop, William’s brother, with the inscription “Pueros suos,” by way of saying “his men.”
