About this book
The English Secretary is by Angel Day and is described by its subtitle as a method of writing epistles and letters (1599). The title page says the work also covers the parts and office of a Secretarie and is divided into two books. The contents list names, among others, an address to Edward de Vere and a chapter on diverse orders of greetings, farewels and subscriptions.
The text defines Anthypophora or Subiectiō as the case when, to a question asked by us, we answer of ourselves in our own reasonings. The text tells someone that the intendment of going to the university was for learning sake, to become an excellent scholar, not an exquisite dancer. A speaker in the text says he had rather lose his life than his good name, than which nothing is of more regard to him.
