About this book
A list of handbooks gives The Age of Pope as 1700-1748, by John Dennis. The book says Queen Caroline was considerably attracted by theological discussion, obtained a bishopric for Berkeley and recommended Walpole to read Butler's Analogy. Swift writes to Stella that the Secretary (Bolingbroke) was gone to his devotions and to receive the sacrament, that several rakes did the same, and that it was not for piety, but for employment, according to Act of Parliament.
George Lillo (1693-1739) is described as writing highly moral tragedies, written for the edification of playgoers, and George Barnwell (1731) is named among his two most important dramas. A dated table records, among others, that Pope died in 1744, Swift died in 1745, and Fielding's Tom Jones appeared under 1749. An alphabetical list of writers gives, among others, Addison, Joseph 1672-1719 and Akenside, Mark 1721-1770.
