About this book

A father's visit to a public health exhibit with his young son gives Elizabeth McCracken a practical example of how parents teach children through everyday experience. Published in 1913, this collection of essays considers childhood at home, at play, in the country, and in schools, libraries and churches. McCracken builds her discussion around conversations and small incidents, asking how adult care prepares boys and girls to take part in the wider community.

Her account of schooling places an older woman's memories of lessons and formal manners beside the lively children passing a suburban window. The contrast draws attention to changing ideas about learning, work and enjoyment. Readers interested in family life or the history of education will find a personal view of American attitudes toward children, supported by photographs credited to Alice Austin.
