About this book
The Anatomy of Drunkenness is a sixth edition by Robert Macnish, who is named as author of The Philosophy of Sleep and member of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. The advertisement to the fifth edition says some parts have been re-written, some new facts added, and several inaccuracies, which had crept into the former editions, rectified. The text says that, according to M. Masurer, a French chemist, from twenty to thirty drops in a glass of water will, in most cases, relieve the patient from the sense of giddiness and oppression of the brain.
The text says Mr. Broomley of Deptford recommends a draught composed of two drachms of Aq. Ammon. Aromat. in two ounces of water as an effectual remedy in drunkenness. The text says Gay-Lussac has silenced the clamorous partisans of one theory about alcohol by separating the alcohol by distillation at the temperature of 66° Fah. The text records the principal feelings produced: giddiness and violent beating in the head, such as occur in the acmé of drunkenness, and a strong propensity to laugh.
