About this book
A cold walk uphill gives Emma Willard the starting point for an argument about breathing, body heat and the movement of blood. In this 1861 account, addressed to Dr. Marcy, she retraces ideas that developed while she was founding the Troy Female Seminary and teaching chemistry. She proposes that heat and expansion in the lungs supply a force for circulation, with the heart regulating the flow. These are the claims of her historical theory.
Willard combines personal observations with descriptions of experiments using water, tubes and valves. Her account also records disputes with medical practitioners and the urgency she felt during outbreaks of cholera. The first-person form gives the discussion a strong personal stake: readers see how she gathered evidence, sought support and defended her conclusions. It offers a study of physiological argument and scientific persuasion in the nineteenth century.
