About this book

France's break with its monarchy leads Alexis de Tocqueville to examine how much of the old order survived in the society that replaced it. His study traces the causes of the Revolution through feudal rights, centralised administration, class divisions and the condition of the peasantry. The argument begins with the habits and institutions inherited from the monarchy, treating them as forces that continued to shape public life after 1789.

Royal reform itself becomes part of the explanation. Tocqueville describes how changes under Louis XV and Louis XVI weakened established institutions and taught the public to imagine further upheaval. His discussion of road building shows the government taking land, damaging estates and delaying compensation. These concrete examples connect political ideas with the experience of property owners. Readers interested in the causes of revolution will find an account of how administrative practices and well-intended reforms can help unsettle an entire social order.

About the author

Alexis de Tocqueville

Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859) was a French aristocrat and magistrate who spent nine months touring the United States with his friend Gustave de Beaumont, officially to report on its penitentiary system. He later sat in the Chamber of Deputies and served briefly as foreign minister of the Second Republic in 1849.
