About this book
The Ancient Cities of the New World presents travels and explorations in Mexico and Central America, accompanied by numerous illustrations. The narrator recalls an earlier government mission to Mexico, undertaken with ambitious plans but little money or knowledge. The account says a lack of money and technical knowledge limited that undertaking to photographing monuments without adding commentary.
The architectural description records a plain north wall, a narrow passage beside a fallen gallery, and openings toward a yard containing the palace tower. The gallery opposite opens onto an irregular courtyard bounded by palace buildings and the tower. The description places Tumbala on one of the highest levels of the Sierra Madre, surrounded by a dark belt of pines.
