About this book
The title identifies the work as a record of discovery and adventure in Palestine. The account describes the construction of a railway to Jerusalem as an engineering project of considerable difficulty because of the natural conformation. The description of the ascent records rough, steep ground, deep valleys, stony sides and ledges of hard grey rock covered with shrubs.
The account notes terraces built up with dry stone walls for growing olives. The discussion says Kuriet el ’Anab is generally called only Kurieh by the peasantry, suggesting an identification with Kirjath of Benjamin. The discussion of cultivation describes experiments employing the native peasantry as by far the most successful yet made.
