About this book
The account describes howler monkeys whose powerful voices make sleep in the forest impossible, according to travellers unaccustomed to their noise, when a troop is within two miles. The red howler is described as reddish brown, with a broad golden yellow band along the spine and bushy whiskers and beard around its face.
The kingfisher is said to dig a deep hole in an earthen bank or cliff, hollowing out an inner cave where several pure white eggs lie with almost nothing but a few fishbones for a nest. The purpura's method of laying eggs is described in terms of fastening the eggs to the surface of a rock by means of little stalks.
