About this book

William J. Long spent years watching wild animals from his tent or canoe, and this fourth volume of his Wood Folk series gathers studies built around one idea: that young creatures are taught. In his own words, the wilderness works as a schoolroom in which mothers train their young in the skills they need to survive.

The chapters follow individual animals and birds rather than whole species. Two fawns lie hidden under a fallen tree, a mother heron leads her chicks on their first frogging trip, and there are encounters with a bear, a fishhawk, a porcupine and partridges. The animals carry names taken from the Milicete language, and a glossary at the back explains them.

The author wrote in 1903 and weighs instinct, training and experience in the preface, so some of his conclusions belong to his time. Readers will still find patient field observation and vivid description of the woods.
