About this book
Edmund G. Gress's manual of American printing is a second edition. Its title page describes a brief history of printing up to the twentieth century, reproductions of the work of early masters, and a practical discussion of the use of type-faces and methods of arrangement. It includes a facsimile of the Declaration of Independence as first printed, about 5 July 1776.
The historical outline names early printers: Conrad Schweinheim and Arnold Pannartz at Subiaco, John de Spira at Venice, Nicholas Jenson, Aldus Manutius and the introduction of italic, and John Froben at Basel, for whom Erasmus had his books printed. The demonstration pages comment on numbered examples, including pages by Bruce Rogers and Updike with swash italic capitals and the long s, and a modern title-page designed by Fred. W. Goudy.
