About this book

The preface describes a request for sketches of great Alpine peaks before a long continental tour, made when the narrator had only a literary acquaintance with mountaineering. The narrator says he had never seen or set foot upon a mountain at that time. The travel account dates the start of a first tour in the Alps to the 23d of July 1860.

The account recalls a schoolboy attempt to scale a great chalk cliff with a brother, describing the occasion as the closest the pair had come to breaking their necks. A note says the ascent of the Pointe des Ecrins has been made several times since 1864, and recommends a ladder or another means of passing the bergschrund.
