About this book
Hours of Exercise in the Alps is by John Tyndall. The preface says that two volumes supplement each other and, taken together, illustrate the mode in which a lover of natural knowledge and of natural scenery chooses to spend his life. The preface says the writer does not think he could have filled his days and hours in the Alps with clambering alone, much as he enjoys the work.
The text says that the party reached the base of the barrier at nine A.M. and had surmounted it at four, so that seven hours had been spent upon that tremendous wall. The text says that Lauener declared that he had good hopes for the first time since the climb began. The text says the cols are simply depressions, and that in the case of many of them the unfissured rock can be traced from side to side.
