About this book

Bent flagpoles, displaced roof tiles and overturned memorial stones become evidence in this 1946 Army report on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Compiled by the Manhattan Engineer District, it examines the August 1945 attacks through damage to buildings, injuries to people and the physical behavior of the explosions. Its opening also explains how investigating teams were organized and sent to Japan to gather technical and medical information.

The report's comparisons show how terrain and structures affected the reach of the blast. In Nagasaki, hills and the direction of ravines help explain differing patterns of damage; elsewhere, investigators use the condition of ordinary objects to estimate pressure. Readers interested in military history, engineering or the history of medicine can study both the observations and the official language used to present them. The document offers a contemporary institutional account of the bombings and their consequences.
