About this book

The attaché at Peking is by Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford Redesdale. Letter VI, headed Peking, 23rd June 1865, says that they are thinking of making a move to the hills next Monday and have almost decided on a temple called Pi Yün Ssŭ. A temple called Wo-Fo-Ssŭ, the temple of the Sleeping Buddha, is named from a huge sleeping idol which it contains, about 20 feet in length.

A passage says that bank-notes, it seems, were first introduced in the days of the Sung dynasty, during the reign of Shao Hsing. An entry marked June 1 says that a new colleague, Sir Eric Farquhar, arrived from England, accompanied by Mr. Brenchley. A passage says of the curiosity shops that there was a great deal of porcelain to which the dealers and local connoisseurs assigned wonderful dates and fine titles.
