About this book
The Autobiography of Parley Parker Pratt is by one of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and embraces the life, ministry and travels, with extracts, in prose and verse, from his miscellaneous writings. The book is edited by his son, Parley P. Pratt. The preface says the editor is discharging a duty solemnly imposed upon him by his lamented father, just before his departure on his last mission to the United States.
The narrator says that in the autumn of 1826 he resolved to bid farewell to the civilized world and to spend the remainder of his days in the solitudes of the great West, among the natives of the forest. The narrator says he took leave of his friends in October, 1826 and started westward, and paid most of his money in Rochester for a small pocket Bible. A character named Luman, drawling in a loud and doleful tone, tells the boys, "the fact is, she never did love me; she only married me out of pity," they being members of the Baptist church together in Vermont.
