About this book
At the season's first major rodeo in Cowtown, Texas, Leonard Carter has a new trick to protect. His competitors have spent a lean winter waiting for prize money, and his advertised Bar Act gives them another reason to worry. Carter has a habit of inventing fancy riding stunts that everyone else eventually learns. Bobby Stuart, Slim Jones, Buck Farrell, and Lou Warner would prefer to get an early look at this one.
Their attempt to spy on Carter leads to a long nighttime walk behind the wrong man. The joke rests on sore feet, elaborate precautions, and the gap between a rider's public confidence and his private curiosity. Against the bright spectacle of prepared horses and polished saddles, the story makes secrecy part of rodeo competition. Its comic interest lies as much in the rivals' efforts to uncover a stunt as in Carter's riding skill.
