About this book
The Poor Scholar is by William Carleton, in a volume headed Traits and Stories of the Irish Peasantry, Part VI. Under the heading The Poor Scholar, the text introduces Dominick M'Evoy and his son Jemmy, who were digging potatoes on the side of a hard, barren hill, called Esker Dhu, one day about the middle of November. Jemmy says he will come home able to rise them from their poverty, or never show his face in the parish of Ballysogarth again.
The text says that the boy trusted in God, and that when removed into his little shed and stretched upon his clean straw he felt that his situation was, in good sooth, comfortable when contrasted with what it might have been. A speaker says to Alley that if she could know what he suffers from fear that he would die without the priest, she would pity him. A reply says: "I do pity you, asthore: but don't be cast down, for I have my trust in God that he won't desart you in your last hour."
