About this book

Snow covers the town outside while Ruth Hilton works through the early hours in Mrs Mason's dressmaking room. The weary apprentices receive half an hour to eat before returning to their stitching. Through the contrast between elaborate clothes and the labour behind them, Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell gives this domestic novel a concrete starting point. The opening also traces the changing streets of an English county town and considers how everyday surroundings shape character and limit individual choice.

In a later scene, Ruth prepares for a visit to the Bradshaw family with help from Miss Benson. Leonard admires his mother, Miss Benson lends gloves, and Mr Benson offers roses from his garden. These small acts of care sit beside conversations about marriage, expectations and private disappointment. Published in 1853, the novel offers readers interested in motherhood and social judgment a view of those concerns through workrooms, family visits and the details of household life.
