About this book
A notice at the front lists The Fleets at War by Archibald Hurd as "the key book to the understanding of the naval situation". The author writes that the Navy must always be the lifeline of the Expeditionary Force, ensuring to it reinforcements, stores, and everything necessary to enable it to carry out its high purpose. The author records that the Admiralty, with the approval of Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, felt itself justified in giving the military authorities a certificate of safe transport before the command of the sea had been secured.
The book gives ship particulars class by class, such as the King George V class of King George V, Centurion, Audacious and Ajax, with a displacement of 23,000 tons and a speed of 22 knots. Another set of particulars covers the Kaiser Friedrich class, with a displacement of 10,600 tons and a speed of 17 knots.
