About this book
At a table in his own house, Peachum studies a ledger that turns crime and punishment into matters of profit. His assistant Filch brings news of trials, while Peachum weighs the usefulness of each member of his gang. Conversation with Mrs. Peachum moves from business to their daughter Polly and her interest in Captain Macheath. To her father, a marriage threatens both his income and his control over family secrets.
The stage work combines spoken exchanges and numbered songs, with named tunes above the verses. Its comedy comes from characters who speak earnestly about honour while bargaining over betrayal. Peachum and Lockit quarrel over money and information, then recognise the advantage of remaining partners. Lucy's distress brings a different pressure into this world of calculated gain. Readers can follow the sharp exchanges and songs for their portrait of affection, self-interest and public respectability.
