The Betrayed is the second book in Jeff Wheeler’s Covenant of Muirwood trilogy, continuing the story he began in The Banished of Muirwood. Maia, the heir to the kingdom of Comoros, is no longer the banished princess of the first book. The political situation has shifted in dangerous ways, and the personal betrayals that the first book set up are coming due in this middle volume. Wheeler uses the second book in the trilogy structure as he often does, to deepen the emotional stakes and to test his protagonist with increasingly difficult choices that prepare for the climax in the third volume.

The Muirwood world that Wheeler has been building across multiple trilogies is now familiar to longtime readers. The maston magic, with its rules about gestures and sigils and the cost of using power. The abbey order that trains young people to use the magic responsibly. The kingdoms with their political complications and their long histories. The Covenant trilogy is set two centuries after the original Muirwood books and shows how the choices Lia and her allies made in the earlier series have shaped the later world. Maia is the heir to a kingdom that Lia helped to save, and her struggle to claim her birthright while remaining true to the deeper covenants the maston tradition demands gives the trilogy its central tension.

Wheeler’s strength as a writer is patience. He builds his worlds carefully, lets his characters grow at a believable pace, and trusts his readers to stay with him through the slower stretches because the payoff is worth it. The Betrayed deepens the relationships, the political stakes, and the magical mythology while moving the larger plot toward the resolution that the third book will deliver.

This is not grimdark fantasy. There is no graphic violence and the romance, while present, stays gentle. What Wheeler offers instead is a story about faith, duty, friendship, and the moral weight of choosing to use power that the world has decided you should not have. For longtime Muirwood fans, The Betrayed is essential. New readers should start with The Banished of Muirwood.
