About this book
The chapter on the formation of the canon examines how the individual books composing the Bible were collected into one volume and declared canonical or authoritative. The discussion says that completing the canon took centuries, and treats its attribution chiefly to Ezra, completed by Nehemiah, as tradition rather than conclusive evidence. The text says there is no proof that all the books of the Old Testament existed together in a collected form before the Christian era.
The moral criticism refuses to accept the Bible as a guide, accusing the text of sanctioning nearly every vice and crime. The catalogue of alleged wrongs includes slavery, wars of conquest, injustice to women, unkindness to children and cruelty to animals.
