About this book
Thomas Paine, the Apostle of Liberty is described as an address delivered in Chicago, January 29, 1916, including the testimony of five hundred witnesses, by John E. Remsburg, President of American Secular Union. The contents list names sections that include, among others, Common Sense and the American Revolution and the Rights of Man and the French Revolution. The speaker says the apostle of liberty, of mercy, and of truth was declared an outlaw by England for espousing the cause of liberty, given a prison by France for advocating mercy, and given by America the cruel crown of thorns for proclaiming the truth.
The speaker quotes Paine as saying “To do good is my religion” and Lincoln as saying “When I do good I feel good, and when I do bad I feel bad”. The text records that Paine was denied burial in a Christian cemetery at New Rochelle because of his religious belief, less than one hundred years before the 14th of October, 1905.
