About this book
The Black Watch at Ticonderoga and Major Duncan Campbell of Inverawe is by Frederick B. Richards. Appendix A is a roll of the officers of the 42nd Highlanders, New York, May 22, 1757, from an old paper in possession of the 7th Duke of Atholl. The text gives words from Lord Howe’s Monument in Westminster Abbey, which name George Augustus Lord Viscount Howe, brigadier general of his Majesty’s forces in America, who was slain on the march to Ticonderoga.
A quoted passage on casualties says the Light Brigade, immortalized by Tennyson, took 673 officers and men into the charge at Balaklava, in which 113 were killed and 134 wounded. The text says Mr. Andrew Carnegie was the generous donor of the funds to build a memorial, with a first gift for a public library and a second gift, with no limitations, to build an historical addition to the library. A list of names with dates in brackets gives, among others, Dougal, (1650-1674), who burned “Bonnie House of Airlie” 1640.
