About this book
West Point presents an intimate picture of the National Military Academy and the life of the cadet, with a foreword by Major-General Hugh L. Scott. The historical account says Washington sent Baron Steuben to West Point in the spring of 1780 to drill troops because he feared a British attack.
The discussion of teaching states that West Point methods oppose a system that develops memory at the expense of thinking and discourage verbatim recitations. The curriculum account says cadets cannot choose their own course or follow their inclinations, and that the prescribed course allows no deviation. A course description includes visits to the battlefield of Gettysburg so students can study the effects of topography on the employment of troops in the field.
