About this book

The Blackmore Country is by F. J. Snell, author of, among others, A Book of Exmoor. The second edition has 32 full-page illustrations from photographs by Catharine W. Barnes Ward. The text says the second son was Richard Doddridge Blackmore, the novelist.

Bagworthy, the text says, was or has been imputed to be the stronghold of the savage Doones. A traveller may quit the beaten track in quest of a shepherd's cot, whence he may easily proceed to the traditional site of Doone Castle and down the Doone valley, along the Bagworthy Water. The text calls Chapman Barrows a purple eminence and the highest point in North Devon. Cannon balls, it is said, have been dug up at Halwell Castle.
