About this book
An account of a Durham roll describes a parchment document thirteen yards long and nine inches broad, made from nineteen separate sheets. The roll was made on the death of John Burnby, a Prior of Durham, with the account giving the year as 1464. The religious houses undertook to pray for the souls of two priors in return for prayers offered by the monks at Durham.
The account of an ordeal describes an accused person carrying iron over a measured distance before the hand was enclosed under seal. The examination of the hand treated festering blood in the track of the iron as guilt, while the absence of that condition meant acquittal.
