About this book
The Blue Book of Chess is a revised edition based on the work of Staunton and modern authorities. Its title page says it teaches the rudiments of the game and analyses the recognized openings, illustrated by games played by Morphy, Harrwitz, Anderssen, Staunton and others. A transcriber's note says the eighty-five illustrative games have been translated into Portable Game Notation.
One passage teaches a beginner to set up the men in order of battle and to practise with one piece at a time, starting with the Queen moving from square to square, then adding the Queen's Bishop and Queen's Knight. Moves are printed in the older abbreviations, such as "Q. to her 5th." The game pages set moves in two columns, among them Game II between V. H. der Laza and Mr. H. of Berlin, and some games also appear in modern notation.
