About this book
Modern Billiards by Benjamin Garno calls itself a complete text-book of the game, containing plain and practical instructions how to play and acquire skill at this scientific amusement. The book is fully illustrated with plates and engravings, showing two hundred and fifty strokes, and the best methods of executing them, as practised by the leading players of the day. The new edition promises new and complete records of all important match and tournament games, amateur and professional, from the earliest to the present time.
The text gives the best verified run as 14, made by Peterson in St. Louis and by Avery years afterward in Chicago. The text says the New York Racquet Club was the first to institute a national championship of amateurs.
