About this book
Pictured Puzzles and Word Play is a book of puzzles by Arthur Cyril Pearson, described as a companion to THE TWENTIETH CENTURY STANDARD PUZZLE BOOK. The contents list sections called Enigmas, Charades, Puzzles, Odds and Ends, and Solutions to Pictured Puzzles and to Word Play. A frontispiece puzzle asks whether the reader can discover by anagram what an ape is saying to an elephant, using exactly the same letters as the sentence “A sly tree-ape, he tries a rum telephone.”
One picture riddle asks why a waiter is like a racehorse, and gives the solution “Because he runs for cups and plates.” Answers given for the word play include Pigeon, for lines that begin “Take for my first a quadruped”, and ICICLE, for lines about a splendid tear. A buried proverb puzzle says a proverb of eight words is buried in a sentence, and a puzzle of missing words says the six missing words are spelt with the same seven letters.
