About this book

After five days in boats, exhausted sailors reach a flat coast whose strange trees and muddy waterways offer little comfort. Their ship, the Glen Carrig, has struck a hidden rock, leaving them to seek safety in unfamiliar seas. The coastal landscape brings an eerie silence, followed by distant cries and hungry growling as evening falls. William Hope Hodgson builds this nautical horror novel around the practical difficulties of survival and the fear of what lies beyond sight.

Framed as John Winterstraw's account to his son in 1757, the story uses an old-fashioned narrative voice to record unsettling details with care. A later passage finds the sailors watching a nearby vessel and debating how to signal its occupants. The boatswain challenges their fearful guesses with a possible human explanation. Readers interested in sea adventures can find here a close connection between isolation, uncertain evidence and mounting dread.
