About this book

Fog closes around the Golden Fleece on her maiden voyage to Australia, leaving the captain and chief mate anxiously watching the darkness. Among the passengers are Flora Trevor, whose proud manner keeps others at a distance, and Richard Leslie, a former naval officer travelling under an assumed name. An unjust conviction has cost Leslie his standing and left him bitter towards the world. Harry Collingwood places these two guarded people within a maritime adventure shaped by danger and practical demands.

On an island, Leslie makes a shelter from poles and sails, digs channels to carry rainwater away and transfers furnishings from a brig. Even moving cargo requires planning, since many cases are too heavy for one person. Such close attention to materials, tools and labour gives the novel a particular appeal for readers interested in survival at sea and the patient work of making unfamiliar surroundings habitable.
