About this book
The Book of Christmas by Thomas K. Hervey is descriptive of customs, ceremonies, traditions, superstitions, fun, feeling, and festivities, with illustrations by R. Seymour. The contents list includes, among others, Court Celebrations of Christmas, Celebrations at the Inns of Court, Lord of Misrule and Christmas Prince, Abbot of Unreason, and Ben Jonson's Masque of Christmas.
The text says that, to the philosophic inquirer, few things are more important in the annals of nations than their festivals, anniversaries and public celebrations of all kinds, and that these show a people in its undress, acting upon its impulses, and separated from the conventions and formalities of its every-day existence. The text says that all the laughing spirits of the season who were engaged in added numbers for the revelries of last night cannot be got quietly laid at rest in the course of a single day.
